Forum: universal_newsreels Subject: Copyright to Universal sound recordings

My question on Universal newsreels is simple. If the newsreels are in the public domain as the heading above says then how can someone or a company claim copyright to the sound recording of one or more of the newsreels? This is a problem I have run into with several of the newsreels and am seeking advice to understand just what the difference is in public domain material and supposed public domain material. The company claiming copyright to the sound recordings is called IODA. Thanks in advance!
